Meet Maria Bongo – a Sussex County based speech therapist, parent/family coach, and AAC communication specialist – committed to helping your little one unlock their true potential. As a lead SLP at a North Jersey public school, I work with students, parents, and caregivers everyday. My goal is to help integrate meaningful, helpful, and empowering communication strategies into everyday life – strengthening interactions at-home, during weekend errands, on the playground – and every activity in-between.

What Does The Typical Session Look Like?
The typical session ranges from 30-45 minutes. We meet your son or daughter where they’re at – addressing current goals, needs, and priorities. Our team focuses on expanding language skills through a range of play-based activities. Maria introduces letter sounds, basic reading/writing concepts, and categories. Initial goals emphasize building phonemic awareness skills including rhyming and syllable segmentation. We specialize in helping children describe objects, explain their surroundings, and differentiate between nouns/verbs.
Our specialization lies in our deeply-personalized, one-to-one approach. In the typical session, Maria practices sharing/turn-taking, asking questions, and creating detailed explanations. Plus, we love to integrate fun games & exercises. Our favorites are Headbands, Pop The Big, Play-Doh, Don’t Break The Ice, Shark Bite, and Zingo.
How Does Your Evaluation & Assessment Process Work?
Assessments typically take anywhere from 45-90 minutes. Maria examines the different areas of language – including phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics, and pragmatics. We strive to understand how language impacts your son or daughter’s functional communication in their home, school, or social environment. Assessments evaluate speech sound production – compared to average developmental milestones.
We value parent input involvement to establish collaborative goals and determine key priorities. We understand that you know your child best – including their day-to-day behaviors and actions. Before the evaluation is complete, we collect a language sample through one-on-one discussions & interactive play. If needed, we’ll additionally coordinate dates/times for follow-up fluency, voice, or oral motor examinations.
After your child’s assessment, you’ll receive a written report within 10-14 days. This document highlights findings, therapy recommendations, and program goals.
Are You Licensed & Certified?
Yes, Language & Literacy Corner is owned and operated by Maria Bongo, M.S. CCC-SLP. Maria is a New Jersey licensed & ASHA certified speech & language pathologist (SLP) with 6+ years experience working with children with a range of learning needs & developmental concerns. She has a background in elementary & special education.
Before establishing Language & Literacy Corner, she started her career in a private, highly-specialized school for children with cerebral palsy and other specialized conditions – often requiring access to Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Here, she coordinated treatment plans directly with occupational therapists (OT), physical therapists (PT), teachers, and one-to-one caregivers. This early experience emphasized the importance of providing access to communication.
Maria additionally worked at an alternative school for children on the autism-spectrum. She focused on strengthening early language skills, building sensory strategies, and motivating children to learn.
Since 2023, Maria has served as the lead speech therapist of a Sussex County public K-8 school – where she works directly on intakes, observations, and treatments, as well as educating parents & teachers.
Why Would My Child See A Speech-Language Pathologist For Reading or Writing?
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) support much more than speech sounds. Spoken and written language are deeply connected, and SLPs are uniquely trained to address many or the language skills that impact reading and writing development including vocabulary, phonological awareness, reading comprehension, sentence formulation, narrative language, and written expression.
If your child can read the words but struggles to understand what they’ve read, explain their ideas, organize their thoughts, or get those ideas onto paper, an SLP may be able to help.
What’s The Difference Between A Tutor And A Speech-Language Pathologist?
A tutor may focus primarily on teaching or reinforcing academic skills. An SLP can look deeper and examine the underlying language skills that may be contributing to difficulty with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, written expression, or learning.
Neither is necessarily better, they serve different purposes. Some children may benefit from tutoring, some from speech-language therapy, and some benefit from both.
My Child Did Not Qualify For School Based Services. Can They Still Receive Private Therapy?
Yes! School eligibility and private services operate differently. Your child may have meaningful areas of weakness without meeting the criteria for school-based special education services.
Private evaluation and therapy can provide individualized support based on your child’s specific strengths and needs, even if they do not receive services through their school.
What Happens During The Free 15- Minute Parent Consultation?
The free consultation is an opportunity to talk about your concerns, what you’re noticing at home or at school, and any previous evaluations or services your child has received. We’ll discuss whether Language and Literacy Corner may be a good fit and what the most appropriate next step might be. There is no obligation to begin services after the consultation.
Do You Accept Insurance?
Language and Literacy Corner is a private pay practice and does not currently bill insurance directly. Upon request, a superbill may be provided for families who wish to independently pursue out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your individual insurance plan.

Language and Literacy Corner provides 100% virtual services to families throughout New Jersey using a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform.
Virtual therapy is individualized, interactive, and designed to keep your child engaged while working toward meaningful goals. Sessions may include digital texts, visuals, writing activities, games, and other materials selected specifically for your child.
